The Gisborne Montessori Pre-school utilises internationally accepted principles developed by Dr Maria Montessori which are interwoven with the early childhood curriculum Te Whāriki.

Our Montessori and Early Childhood Qualified teachers work with families/whanau to ensure all children are nurtured and extended to their own potential within the specially prepared environment. Children have access to a wide range of rich and diverse resources which allow them to explore and follow their interests. Each child is treated with respect, gentleness, humour and compassion which they learn to extend to the other children and adults.

They learn to take pride in their independence and competence and also develop expertise in managing their relationships with their classmates and teachers. Children are encouraged to take on the responsibility for the care of their learning environment and develop a strong sense of community and belonging.

  • Incorporated in the multicultural philosophy of Montessori is the opportunity for children to develop knowledge and understanding of the cultural heritage of both partners to the Treaty of Waitangi.

  • Management practices are also consistent with the Montessori philosophy.
